What skills are covered?

  • Husbandry skills so that your dog is happy to be examined, brushed or treated by someone other than yourself without unnecessary stress.
  • Self-Control Skills and frustration tolerance for good manners and to help your dog regulate their emotions. Your dog should be able to ignore other dogs, people and other distractions such as food.
  • Calmness to encourage your dog to be steady when out on walks and around other dogs and people and in new, distracting environments. Your dog will also learn how to remain relaxed and stress free whilst you go out of sight.
  • Communication skills for you so that you can effectively listen and communicate with your dog in a way that they understand at a distance and in distracting environments.
  • Focus and listening skills to teach your dog to respond to your cues and offer you attention despite real life distractions.
  • Good Manners to teach your dog the behaviours they need to live in our lives such as “no jumping up” and steadiness around real life distractions. Your dog will learn how to remain calm and able to respond to your cues despite access to distractions such as food or people.
  • Progression of choices and how to incorporate them into your training, how to notice and reward good choices. Just as important, we will show you when management is needed to prevent bad choices occurring.
  • Continue to meet your dog’s needs to ensure that they live a life full of enrichment with trick training, scent work and assistance training.
  • Enhance your relationship and bond with the dog through training for fun and exploring new skills together.
  • Introduction of new training skills for the handler so that you are confident in how to handle your dog safely in a variety of different situations
  • How to manage and direct your dog’s behaviour when out in public so as not to cause a nuisance to the general public and remain under your control at all times.

Advanced exercises include;

  • Recall Games – teach your dog to come back when called to mimic off lead walks. Recall from real life distractions such as other dogs or food etc
  • Leave It Games – teaching your dog to ignore real life distractions and to come away from them when called. Teaches control around people with food.
  • Fun tricks, scent games and play – teach your dog that you are fun to be around and enhance your bond and relationship. Learn new skills together for enrichment.
  • Play Manners – take it and drop skills
  • Loose Lead Walking – teaches your dog how to walk on the lead without pulling in a real-life environment with real-life distractions. We will also look at off-lead heelwork around distractions and oncoming dogs and people.
  • Good Manners – teaches your dog the behaviours they need to live in our lives such as “no jumping up” and lunging at other dogs etc. Teaches safe and polite greetings as well as food manners.
  • Reliable Positions and steadiness with distractions – for safety and control. Stay behaviour whilst handler undertakes a job and also a settle behaviour around owner and food. Out of sight stays are introduced so that your dog can remain relaxed when left in a position and also when an owner leaves the room.
  • Focus games to teach your dog to listen and respond and always orientate back to you whilst around distractions and larger distances.
  • Control / Safety Behaviours such as door safety and control when entering / leaving a vehicle whilst other dogs and handlers are present.
  • Handling / Husbandry Behaviours – teaches your dog to accept handling from a Vet or Groomer for example.
